- 7 hours

East-side hiking or west-side viewpoints? Plan the visit that suits your time, your walking ability and the view you want to see.
Stuðlagil lies in Jökuldalur Valley in East Iceland. Its basalt walls can be seen from both banks of the Jökla River, but the two visits involve different access routes and different amounts of walking.
Choose the east side (Klaustursel) for the hike towards the canyon and closer views of the columns. Choose the west side (Grund) for viewpoints and a staircase down to the riverbank, with a shorter walking route.
The hiking route
The east-bank approach starts from the Klaustursel side of the valley. It is the hiking option for visitors who want to follow the longer trail towards the canyon and spend more time on foot.
Our canyon hikes cover around 5 km return, mostly on gravel, with two short inclines and descents. Allow time for the walk back as well as photographs and stops.
This is the side used by our Canyon Hike and Canyon Hike & Vök Baths excursions.
The hiking experience: a closer view of the columns, with a return walk to plan for.
The west-side experience: viewpoints and a staircase down to the riverbank.
The viewpoint route
The west-bank visit is approached from Grund. New viewpoints and a staircase lead down to the riverbank, offering different perspectives on the river and basalt formations.
The walking distance is shorter than on the east side, but stairs and uneven ground still matter. A shorter route is not automatically a suitable route for every visitor.
Our Canyon Express & Vök Baths excursion visits this side.
Choose your access point first, then check the conditions and leave enough time for the route you have chosen.
Getting there
Access is from Route 1 via Road 923. The approaches include gravel roads. Check your destination pin carefully: the east- and west-side car parks serve different routes.
Time and conditions
The visit length depends on your starting point, walking pace and stops. Do not confuse the time spent at the canyon with the full journey from your accommodation or cruise port.
Water colour and weather
River colour varies with water flow and sediment; turquoise water is not guaranteed. Wet or icy paths and steps can change what is practical on the day.
Walking preparation
Wear shoes with good grip and bring weatherproof layers. Stay on designated routes, follow local signs and keep away from unstable edges and the river.

All three excursions depart from Seyðisfjörður. The key choice is the canyon side, whether you want a hike, and whether you want to include Vök Baths. Open the tour page for current availability, prices and full booking details.

Need help deciding which visit fits your day?
Choose the east side if the hike and a closer view of the canyon are your priority. Choose the west side if you prefer a shorter viewpoint visit. Check the walking and stair requirements of either option before deciding.
No. Canyon Express & Vök Baths visits the west-side viewpoints. The two Canyon Hike excursions visit the east side. The five-hour hike does not include Vök Baths; the seven-hour hike does.
Our Stuðlagil shore excursions depart from Seyðisfjörður. Match the tour to your arrival port and cruise call, and check pickup and return arrangements on the tour page. If your ship calls at another port, contact us before booking.
The west-side route is shorter, but includes stairs and paths. Tell us about your walking requirements before booking so we can discuss the actual route with you.
Not necessarily. Water flow, sediment and seasonal conditions affect its appearance. Choose your visit for the canyon and landscape, rather than a guaranteed water colour.
